Saw some elk up quite close. Yeah, I was standing about 8 feet away… And now I learn you’re not supposed to go within 50 yards of these guys! Apparently you’re not supposed to get close to elk because they will beat and trample you with their hooves of death. Now I learn this? After we fearlessly walked right through a ‘gang’ of them? With an innocent 5 year old? Yes, they are called gangs when they’re together, which I suppose should be the first clue of aggressive tendencies. Maybe Missouri elk are tame, but the word is that hunters are more afraid of elk than bears. Nice.

Here’s what I think: Hunters are insecure wusses that need to shoot things to prove that they’re more powerful than animals without guns. I, however, am so confident and obviously non-threatening that the elk allow me and my people to walk among them.

That’s obviously what happened. More likely, it was the fearless blond child leading the way.
