Domestic Violence Is a Pre-Existing Condition in Nine States.

oldauntamy:

whileyouweresleeping:

In nine states, it is perfectly acceptable to deny someone of insurance if they’re being beaten up by their partner.* It qualifies as a pre-existing condition.

So if you live in Arkansas, Idaho, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Wyoming or Washington, DC, and if you are being abused by your spouse, you will not be covered. Meaning that if you turn up at the emergency room with internal bleeding caused by said abuser, you will be sent on your way shortly thereafter.

If passing a federal law that stops these practices is being socialist, then by all means, let’s turn the U.S. into France. We promise we won’t make you eat foie gras.

— In ScienceBlogs and The Huffington Post, from London.

*I’m not just going to talk about women beaten up by men, because even if these make up an overwhelming majority, the opposite is true in something between 20 and 40 percent of the cases of domestic violence.
