My dad just informed me that they canceled cable when I was 12 or 13 in part because my sister (3 years younger) and I watched Dirty Dancing on HBO too much. We saw it for some reason — I think my parents actually rented it — when I was ten and she was seven. We had no idea what was going on (Catholic upbringing and all) and apparently asked too many uncomfortable questions. But we liked watching the dancing so if it was on TV later, apparently we would watch it. To this day I will never understand why they called Jennifer Gray’s character “Baby.” It seemed perverted and creepy to me even when I was ten and didn’t know what the word perverted meant.

In actuality, they canceled cable because I got braces and the cable payments went to that (or so they told me), making the whole metallic mouth experience that much sweeter. That, I knew at the time.
